Allumettes

Emerson wrote, "The best thing for the inside of a man is the outside of a horse."

Turns out it's also the best thing for a young girl—and for a writer taking a break from his manuscript.

Here in the Cantal, Diego n'co's Allumettes reimagines Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Match Girl" as something luminous and redemptive. Where Andersen's story ends in cold and darkness, this equestrian theatre transforms each struck match into bursts of life—ten horses and five artists rescuing the lost child with grace, acrobatics, and poetry.

No cameras allowed during the performance. You'll have to imagine the dreamlike world they conjured in that ring. But trust me: the sparks lingered long after the final bow.

If you find yourself in Auvergne, seek out this company. They're doing something extraordinary.
